Life insurance for Cancer Patients

Summary: With over 200 types of cancer, it is one of the more common conditions we cover for critical illness, and most people can relate to the condition, either personally or via a friend or family member.

Getting Life Insurance when diagnosed with cancer

Unfortunately, around one in two of us will get cancer at some point in our lives, many people choose to take out life insurance as financial protection against the impact cancer can have on individuals and families.

You can take out a life insurance policy with critical illness insurance cover, for added protection. Critical illness cover can help remove some of the financial stress if you need to take time off work to care for your child or help fund any treatment or changes to the home to accommodate their condition.

In addition to cancer we also cover against some heart conditions and a range of other illnesses listed in our Policy Terms and Conditions.

I’ve been diagnosed, can I still get insured?

If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer or you are in partial or complete remission, getting life insurance and critical illness cover is possible but can’t be guaranteed. The price could increase, certain medical conditions could be excluded, or we may not be able to offer life insurance, this will depend on the disclosures in the application.

Finally, remember it’s important that you answer questions about your health and medical history accurately and honestly – if you don’t, it could invalidate your policy.

What if I have a family history of cancer?

It’s well documented that certain types of cancer have hereditary links, however overall, only a small proportion of cancers have a genetically inherited connection.

If you would like to find out if you have inherited a faulty gene that increases your risk of cancer, “predictive genetic testing” can be carried out. These tests will help to reveal if you have a high risk of developing cancer.

If you have a high incidence of cancer in your family or genetic testing has revealed that you have an increased risk of developing cancer, your premiums may be affected. This increased risk however also means that investing in life insurance and critical illness cover may be a prudent decision should the worst happen.
